Showing Respect Online - Digital Citizenship Lesson #2

In Grade 1, students have already participated in one Digital Citizenship lesson that was co-taught by Kelli Buxton, the G1 tech coach, and Ali Cuthbert, the G1 librarian.  The focus was Going Places Safely Online.  Students learned that they should follow certain safety rules when traveling online, just as they would when they are traveling in the real world.   

Safety Rules:

• always ask your parent or teacher first
• only talk to people you know
• stick to places that you know (when in doubt, close it out)

For the second lesson in our Digital Citizenship Skills sequence, Grade 1 students will learn how to Show Respect Online. This skill will primarily focus on blog post commenting. Students will learn that they should ask themselves 3 questions before they make a comment on a peer’s blog post.   

Think Before You Comment

Would I say this in person?
Did I only use first names?
Is my comment positive?

To reinforce these key components to blog post commenting, students will have access to this ebook (on your ipad, you can download and open it in iBooks) on their device at school that they can refer to at any time.
