Basic Photography Skills for Grade 4

All of grade four's field trips are in second semester, including trips to an aquarium, Sungei Buloh, and Bukit Timah.  Each of those trips offers many useful photo opportunities now that students have their own iPads in rugged military drop cases.

To help classes prepare for the field trips, Susan Sedro, the grade 4 technology coach, developed a series of photography lessons. Ideally, the skills would be spread across two or three different lessons to give students time to absorb and gain sufficient practice with the skills.

Students improve their photographs by learning to use these skills:
  • Take lots of photos and delete all the ones which are not great;
  • Only share respectful photos;
  • Holding the iPad steady and straight;
  • Tap focusing before taking a photo and setting the exposure;
  • Fill the frame;
  • Pay attention to where the light is;
  • Use the Rule of Thirds.
