Colonial Characters

Grade 5 students completed a fun activity to put themselves in American Colonial Dress. The activity introduced them to a number of image editing tools as well as image search techniques.

American Colonial Dress


  1. Open the email from me inviting you to collaborate
  2. Click on the G5XXXXPhotos folder
  3. Click Add to Drive
  4. Click Open in Drive
  5. Switch to Grid so you can see the images rather than just the filename
  6. Choose your photo
  7. Right click (or hold down the control key and click) and click on your photo
  8. Choose Download
  9. Open a new tab
  10. Do an image search for american colonial dress
  11. Refine your search to obtain an image of a person with your given occupation.
  12. Search for an image you like
  13. Ensure you are viewing the image and not the thumbnail
  14. Right click (or hold down the control key and click) and Copy Image
  15. Return to your Google Drive
  16. Select ti 5XXXX Gr5 Drop folder
  17. Create a new Drawing
  18. From the Edit menu choose Paste
  19. Name your Drawing
  20. Click Browse
  21. Navigate to your Downloads folder
  22. Choose your photo
  23. Click Open
  24. Your photo will probably be a little large so click Resize Image
  25. Grab a corner handle and drag in to make your photo smaller
  26. Click Resize Image
  27. Choose the Crop Image tool
  28. Drag a selection box around your head
  29. Click Crop
  30. Choose the Eraser tool
  31. Erase your neck
  32. Click Apply
  33. From the Edit menu choose Transparent
  34. Click on the white background
    It should become a checker board
  35. Right click (or hold down the control key and click) and Copy Image
  36. Return to your Google Drawing
  37. From the Edit menu choose Paste
  38. Move your head into place
  39. Resize your head necessary
    Use a corner handle
  40. Rotate your head if necessary
    Use the top dot to rotate
  41. Flip your head if necessary
    Arrange > Rotate > Flip Horizontally
