Reading Fluency Recordings in Grade 4

Sometimes, being 1:1 with iPads makes it easy to gather some long hanging educational fruit.  One example is reading fluency.  Research shows that the act of recording themselves reading and then listening to the recording helps children improve their reading fluency.  This task is easily accomplished by mashing a few apps.

1. Take a photo of the page you are going to read.
2. Pull the photo into a new Explain Everything presentation.
3. Review the Reading Fluency Rubric so you remember what skills make a fluent reader.
4. Using your earbuds, record your voice in Explain Everything as you read the page. It's a good idea to start the recording by stating the name and author of the book.
5. Listen to a bit of your recording to make certain it is audible.
6. Upload the video to your class YouTube account. Include your first name in the title.
7. Listen to the recording while you fill out the rubric.
8. Snap a photo or two of your completed rubric.
9. Open Blogsy.  Insert your video and your photos.  Label and titled the post.
10. Publish.

Most teachers are choosing to go with a cold reading rather than a practiced reading.  Students have been pretty good this time about going with that although there are always a few who want to rerecord to make it better.
